Let’s assume you know what flooring material you want for your home. You may also have chosen your flooring company. Your flooring company will still have at least three questions for you no matter what material you’ve chosen.
1. Color & Finish
This doesn’t just apply to hardwood flooring although you’ll have the most options if you choose unfinished hardwood or engineered wood flooring. You’ll need to not only choose a stain, but also a topcoat or finish. With prefinished products you’ll have fewer options, but still choices. If you’ve decided on laminate, you’ll need to choose the durability or AC rating of the flooring along with a color/pattern.
2. Underlayment
Some laminate flooring includes an underlayment, however, not all flooring does. If the flooring material you’ve chosen does not, you will want an underlayment. Some materials will protect your flooring from moisture. Others will dampen noise. Some will make the flooring feel softer under your feet. Talk to your flooring company about your goals and they can recommend some options.
3. Installation Pattern
Perhaps one of the biggest decisions will be the installation pattern. We most often install plank style wood and laminate flooring perpendicular to the home or room entrance so the boards run lengthwise. However, that’s not the only option. You can choose two different species of wood and your flooring company can install a boarder around a room. Or, if you have shorter boards that are all the same length, you may consider a herringbone or chevron pattern. Parquet patterns are also becoming more popular again. You will want to consider the size and shape of the room before you may your final decision.
