You can expect to pay more for real hardwood than engineered wood or laminate. But, even within the same type of flooring, there are many variables that can impact price which is why flooring estimates can vary so widely. Things like wood species of hardwood and engineered wood. The wear layer on engineered products and the AC rating on laminate can all impact the price.
Installation and Process
First, the flooring estimate should include removal and disposal of your old flooring. If it does not specify this in writing, you may be stuck with old carpeting or flooring in your garage until you can figure out how to get rid of it. Don’t assume, make sure this is written into your contract.
Your flooring company should also include in writing that they will inspect your subfloor prior to installing your new flooring. If there are issues, they should discuss with you the issue and the repair costs. This can be hard to include in a flooring estimate before your old flooring is removed unless there is an obvious issue. They should, however, be able to include leveling your subfloor in the quote. Lastly, they also should include underlayment for installation on slab flooring as well as any flooring material where underlayment is recommended.
Workmanship Warranty
Your flooring comes with a manufacturer’s warranty. This only protects you from manufacturer defects. Your flooring installer should include their own workmanship warranty. That will protect you should there be an issue weeks or months in the future from installation issues. Most good flooring companies include one year for their workmanship warranty so the floors are installed through all seasons.
