If you’re considering new floors, but want to make sure your house doesn’t look dated, you’ll want to pay attention to the latest flooring trends. Hardwood flooring remains a popular flooring choice and is always on trend, provide you choose the right finish. Not to worry, there are a wide variety of finish options no matter what style you’re looking to convey with your new hardwood floors.
Grey & Greige
Few hardwood floor finishes are as trendy as grey and greige. Although grey flooring has been popular for several years now, the more popular shade are more greige. Greige flooring adds a little brown to the grey making it slightly warmer, and to some, more welcoming. If you love the look of grey floors but it doesn’t go with your décor, ask your flooring company about greige options.
Whitewash
As farmhouse décor remains a popular choice throughout the home, whitewashed floors continue trending. However, they work well with other styles like beach or coastal, contemporary and even shabby chic. One misconception is that whitewashed floors are painted, they are not, at least not when properly done. Your hardwood flooring company will use white stain and a matte polyurethane to compete the look.
Go Natural
Depending on the type of hardwood you choose for your new floors, a naturally finished floor may have a reddish hue, tan, honey or even yellow. If you want a clean look, work with your flooring company to find the right species of wood and choose a natural finish that will go with any style.
Dark Finishes
Dark finishes are still quite popular. We always remind homeowners that dark floors can make a small room feel smaller, so keep that in mind if you’re considering going dark. Also, although dark floors look very rich, they also show dirt and scratches more quickly than lighter or natural finishes.
What About the Floors Themselves?
If we’re installing new floors, we recommend choosing boards at least four inches wide and of varied length to stay on trend. Wider planks are more common today than the narrow planks of years past. The wider the plank, the more expensive the flooring so your final selection may come down, in part, to your budget.
