Flooring Suggestions for Your Room Addition

flooring for a room addition

With such a competitive housing market, more families are deciding to add on to their home rather than move. If you’ve decided an addition is the right option, you’ve likely already realized that you have countless decisions to make. One of those is thee flooring for the room addition. Unless you’re planning a big home remodel, you may not need new flooring in your entire home which means you’re going to have to figure out the right flooring that will look good in your addition. Here are some tips as to how to choose the right flooring.

Start by Looking at the Surrounding Rooms’ Flooring

Although the choice is ultimately up to you, there are some flooring material that doesn’t transition well to certain materials. Here are a few examples of what does work:

  • Carpet – You can transition to just about any other flooring material, including other types of carpet.
  • Tile – Transitions well to carpet, hardwood, engineered wood and laminate.
  • Laminate – Choose carpet or tile, avoid trying to match your existing laminate unless you have enough left over from the original install.
  • Hardwood and engineered wood flooring – It’s best to transition only to tile or carpet.

Consider the Room’s Purpose

If your added space is for kids, you likely want a durable flooring material that can stand up to spills. Laminate may be a great option. Perhaps you’re adding on a home office or learning space. In that case, hardwood, engineered wood and laminate are all great options. Of course, if you’ve created an entertainment space near your pool, a non-slip tile may be the right choice.

Look at Your Budget

Although most flooring material come in a wide price range, laminate is almost always less expensive than engineered wood flooring. Engineered wood flooring costs less than hardwood in most cases. Tile and carpet both come in many price points. Remember, you have to budget for not only the cost of materials, but also the installation.
