Whether you’re installing new hardwood flooring or refinishing wood floors in your home, you want the right hardwood flooring finish. Depending on the look you prefer and lifestyle, there are three categories of wood flooring finishes; oil-based, water-based and hard wax oils. Within each category, there are several options. Over the next two blogs we’ll touch on each one.
Why a Finish is a Necessity
No matter the wood species and the stain color you chose, it needs a finish to further protect the flooring. The hardwood flooring finish gives your wood some protection as well as sheen. For example, you’ll notice on a newly finished wood floor that the water will bead up on the planks. That’s the finish protecting the water from seeping into the wood. It also helps protect against scratches. Basically, the finish keeps your floor looking nice longer than an unfinished floor.
Water-based Polyurethane
This is the most popular finish, especially for refinishing. It’s popularity comes from three main factors.
- There are several different options when it comes to the sheen from matte to high gloss.
- Less time to dry between coats and before you can walk on it.
- Little to no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which aren’t good to breath in (or especially good for the environment).
Some would argue that a water-based polyurethane isn’t as durable as the oil-based counterpart. That was true in the early products, but modern products are just as, if not stronger, than an oil-based hardwood flooring finish.
You may be wondering why everyone doesn’t automatically choose a water-based finish. There are a few disadvantages. First, you will need more coats of a water-based product. And, not only is the product more expensive, but you’ll need more of it and your flooring company will take more time to do the job which equates to a higher cost overall. Need more information?
